Hyphen mattress unboxing

The Hyphen mattress is painless to unbox, simply follow along in the steps shown in the video and you are good to go.

The mattress comes compressed in a box, so it will take a few days to fully decompress and firm up.  Thus don’t worry if it feels a little too soft the first few nights.

If you’re still looking for more information on this bed-in-a-box, check out my full Hyphen mattress review.

Zinus Mattress Unboxing

As you follow along in the video, you can see that unboxing the Zinus is a fairly easy process.  I recommend starting the unboxing on your actual bed frame, because the mattress is more difficult to move around once it is out of the packing.

The mattress comes compressed, so know that the feel will change over the next few days.  If possible, I would say don’t sleep on it for 72 hours (though it will be fine if you need to beforehand).  The mattress will have a slight smell as well (called off-gassing) when coming out of the box, which should go away within a few days as well.

Make sure to check out my Zinus mattress review for more information on this popular memory foam option!

Authenticity 50 Sheets Reviews

Authenticity 50 are sheets generating some buzz because of their made in USA tag and affordable price (for the high quality).  I tried the sheets for two weeks and overall had a great experience.  Read on for my A50 sheets review.

Authenticity 50 Sheets Review

About The A50 Sheets

Authenticity 50 gets their cotton and manufacture the sheets in the US, a rarity for any textile these days.  The sheets are 100% Supima cotton and are a Percale weave.  The sheets are 250 thread count, though generally I encourage you not to made a decision based solely on the thread count (it is not an outright indicator of quality as many believe).

Upon Arrival

Authenticity 50 Review

I received a queen set of the white sheets, which includes 2 pillow cases, one fitted sheet, and one flat sheet.  The packaging and initial impression of the sheets was very good, and the sheets feel pretty good immediately, even before a wash.

The Fit and Feel

Authenticity 50 Sheets Supima Cotton Feel

The sheets are Percale, which means they have a crispy feeling, rather than a silky-smooth feeling.  Compared to other Percale options that I have tried, they actually felt smoother and softer out of the box, and became slightly softer after a few washes.  Definitely less crispy than Brooklinen or Parachute.

The sheets fit my queen size well, I didn’t notice any shrinkage after washing.  One place to look at fit for me is always the pillow cases, and I think Authenticity 50 did a good job with sizing.  Below you can see it fits my slightly-smaller-than-average pillow (currently testing) well, and has some space for a larger pillow also.

Authenticity 50 Pillow Case Fit

My experience

The priority with me (especially during summer months) is sleeping cool, and Authenticity 50 did a great job of making that happen.  I did use the flat sheet, and felt like they slept cooler than most of the other sheets that I have reviewed.

The feel as I said is very nice, it’s a very non-obtrusive and light sheet that you almost forget is there while sleeping.  I think they have a nice mix of sturdy yet light and breathable in this set.

The edge of the sheet also appears to be a bit thicker, something I feel adds to a nice luxurious feel (see below):

Authenticity 50 Sheets

Final recommendation

Overall I had a great experience with these sheets, considering they are made in America I think the price is hard to beat.  They definitely have a luxury feel that you would find in sheets that are significantly more expensive.

If you like the Percale feel, and value made in America bedding, I don’t think Authenticity 50 can be beat!

Hyphen Mattress Review

Hyphen is a bed-in-a-box option that cuts out a lot of costs associated with buying a mattress to deliver great value to the consumer.  Hyphen had a cool design and good pitch, so I was excited to give it a try.

Overall I had a great experience on the mattress, with a couple complaints as well.  Read my full Hyphen mattress review for details.

You will love the Hyphen mattress if you…

  • Want to sleep cool – Hyphen puts a lot of effort into making their mattress sleep cool, including infused copper (though they don’t advertise that part much).  In my experience it definitely slept cool
  • You are looking for great value – Hyphen does not outsource their manufacturing, they’re making the mattress in their own factory, giving them an edge even over the other online-only competitors
  • You want a mattress for all sleeping positions – I think Hyphen is medium-firm, but has a feel which made it comfortable for me in all sleeping positions

Hyphen Mattress Reviews

You may not like the Hyphen mattress if you…

  • Want a very soft or very firm mattress – Hyphen caters to the average sleeper, but if you have a very strong firmness preference, Hyphen may not be the best fit.
  • Like the memory foam or innerspring feel – Hyphen has a “springier” foam feel, which is distinctly different than a traditional memory foam feel (think Tempurpedic) or innerspring feel

Feel and Firmness

The Hyphen mattress has more “spring” than a memory foam mattress, making it easier to move around and get out of the bed. See how it comes back more quickly in the video below:

The Hyphen is of pretty average firmness, I’d put it at a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale.  However I do find it comfortable when sleeping on the side or stomach, unlike some mattresses of average firmness.

Motion Transfer Test

Below see my motion transfer “test” for the Hyphen mattress, where I will see if the mattress is a good mattress for couples.

As you can see, the object is barely disturbed as I roll around on the mattress.  As expected with a good quality foam mattress, it performs very well in the motion isolation test.

Construction

Hyphen is unique in that the company actually manufactures in-house, rather than outsource the manufacturing.  The layers consist of:

  • Comfort layer: 2 inches of Hyphen foam
  • Transition layer: 2 inches of Buoyant foam
  • Base layer: 6 inches of Orthopedic support foam

See the details of the Polyester zipper cover below:

Hyphen mattress cover

Other things to note:

  • Hyphen has a 20 year warranty and 100 night sleep trial
  • The mattress has 2 layers of anti-microbrial protection
  • The mattress is infused with copper to help it sleep cooler

Zinus Mattress Review

The Zinus mattress is one of the most popular memory foam options on Amazon (very reasonable price, lots of good reviews) so I was excited to try it for myself.

Overall I liked this bed-in-a-box mattress, but had some complaints as well.  See my experience in my full Zinus mattress review.

You will like the Zinus mattress if you…

  • Are looking for great value – Zinus is priced incredibly low for a mattress of its quality, between $100-$300 depending on size and model
  • Want lots of reviews – Zinus has been on Amazon for quite a while, with many positive reviews (and a few negative reviews for good measure)
  • Like the pure memory foam feel – Zinus has a pure memory foam feel (they also have spring and hybrid options available which I didn’t try)

Zinus Mattress Review

You may not like Zinus if you…

  • Want a luxury mattress – Zinus is great value, but it’s not the best memory foam mattress available on the market.  If you’re willing to pay significantly more, you can get more
  • Want a long trial period – many of the bed-in-a-box options will offer free refunds for a long period (eg 100 days).  Zinus offers 30 days, though note these other options are usually at least 2x the price as well

Feel and Firmness

See the feel of the Zinus mattress below:

There are a variety of Zinus options to suit different firmness and feel preferences, this is the average firmness model. As you can see, it has a very slow reaction time, which is typical for memory foam mattresses.

This model is probably the best option for the majority of sleepers.  You may want to choose one of the softer or firmer mattresses if you are a side sleeper or stomach sleeper.

Motion Transfer Test

The Zinus mattress I tested was memory foam, so we expect it to perform very well in terms of motion transfer.  See the results below:

I haven’t tested the hybrid or innerspring mattresses from Zinus, but I expect that the memory foam options will perform the best in terms of motion transfer.

Construction and Materials

The Zinus mattress I tried is four layers of foam totaling 10 inches thick.  These layers include:

  • Top comfort layer: 3 inches of 2 lb density memory foam
  • Transition layer: 2 inches of 1.7 lb density pressure relief memory foam
  • Base layer: 3.5 inches of 1.7 lb density comfort curve memory foam
  • Base layer: 3.5 inches of 1.7 lb density comfort curve memory foam

The densities for memory foam can loosely used to gauge durability.  At these densities, I wouldn’t expect the mattress to last a lifetime, but at this price point it should be fine to replace the mattress every 5-10 years.  See a close-up of the mattress cover below:

Zinus Mattress cover

Other things to note

  • The mattress is available on their own site or Amazon (more popular)
  • Zinus has a number of other value products, including toppers, foundations, and pillows
  • Products are not made in the USA

I had a good sleeping experience on the mattress, and I think one of the Zinus options could be good for anyone, depending on their sleeping preferences.  Zinus is definitely a great value for the price.  With so many reviews on Amazon, I would say this is definitely a good option for people with a lower budget (less than $400).

Spindle Mattress Review

I was excited to review the Spindle mattress because it is the least expensive natural latex mattress that I have reviewed.  Overall I was really impressed by the mattress, but had a few complaints as well.

Read my full Spindle mattress review for my personal experience.

You will love the Spindle mattress if you…

  • Want an all-natural mattress – the Spindle mattress is 100% natural, which is very unique in the mattress industry
  • Want great value – though Spindle is still more expensive than a lot of bed-in-a-box options, it is the least expensive all-natural mattress I have reviewed and in my opinion is an incredible mattress for the price
  • Want firmness options – You can rearrange the Spindle mattress layers to adjust the firmness (see my example video below)
  • Want a bouncier foam feellatex mattresses have a similar comfort/support tradeoff to memory foam, however they don’t have that “stuck in the bed” feeling that some people associate with memory foam

Spindle Mattress Reviews

You may not like the Spindle mattress if you…

  • Don’t want assembly – Spindle comes in three separate boxes and requires some assembly.  It’s a straightforward process, but more work than the average mattress
  • Want the memory foam feel – Spindle is all foam, but has a different feel than a traditional memory foam mattress (think Tempurpedic)

Mattress Assembly and Firmness Adjustment

The Spindle mattress will arrive in three boxes. Assembly is somewhat involved, but as you can see in the video below, pretty straightforward.

The process is definitely more complicated than the average mattress, but overall easy to manage (you may need assistance if you can’t easily move around).  I did end up adjusting the layers a few times after the initial assembly to get the edges perfectly aligned, but overall the mattress felt great and ready to sleep on right out of the boxes. Spindle Natural Latex Mattress Review

Firmness Adjustment

By changing the order of the latex layers (and sometimes flipping them upside down) you can adjust the firmness of the mattress.  I had mine in a medium-firm setting.  I suggest you follow the instructions on the Spindle mattress site if you want a different setting.

See the feel and firmness in the video below:

Motion Transfer Test

The Spindle mattress is all foam, so we expect it to perform well in the mattress motion transfer test.

Below see how the object is barely disturbed as I move around on the mattress, making it a great mattress for couples.

My Experience

As you can see in my assembly video, I set the mattress up for the medium firmness setting.  I chose this because I’m primarily a side sleeper, so generally this is a good place to start.

The mattress was great on my side, and very comfortable on my back and stomach as well.  The first night there were a few lumps on the edges due to the layers being slightly misaligned, but I was able to unzip it and line them up perfectly after a few tries.

Spindle Latex mattress personal experience

The big thing with a latex mattress is the bounce, Spindle has plenty of that.  I really like the feel, it makes it really easy to move around and get out of the bed (plus much better for sex), but note that it is distinctly different than a memory foam feel.

The assembly part is a bit of a pain – and if you plan on switching the firmness regularly (for some reason) it could get annoying.  But really once you get it set up, the hard part is over and you won’t have to revisit it again for a long time.

Spindle Natural Latex Mattress Construction

As you know at this point in the review, Spindle is all-natural latex.  At this price point it’s rare to see an all-natural mattress, so I’m very impressed in that regard.

Latex is a great sleeping surface because it feels like memory foam (in terms of support and comfort), but also has more “spring” to the foam, so you don’t get a sinking-in feeling.  It also sleeps much cooler than memory foam in general.

Specs

Spindle imports their own latex (primarily from Guatemala) and gets their wool and organic cotton from the US.  They do disclose the ILDs for the latex, but urge on their site to only consider it lightly when comparing latex mattresses.  They also have the Oeko-Tex 100 – Class I (the most stringent standard) latex certification.

Overall Spindle is very transparent with their materials and clearly go the extra mile to produce a very natural mattress.

Spindle

Other Things To Note

  • They offer a 10 year warranty and a 25 year comfort life program
  • They manufacture the mattress as well, and buy the latex and fabric directly from source
  • Spindle will occasionally go on sale – but they have a 60 day price guarantee, where they will refund the difference if the price drops
  • Spindle is manufactured in the USA

Final Recommendation

Spindle was very comfortable to sleep on, and I’m really impressed to see a quality natural latex mattress at this price point.  I personally think that a natural mattress is a great investment, and Spindle makes it so that more people are financially able to make the investment.

Overall I definitely recommend the mattress.  Other than a little more assembly than normal, Spindle really stands out from the competition.

Endy Mattress Unboxing

As you can see, it’s very easy to unbox the Endy.  Just simply follow along with the video above and you are good to go!

Though it’s a fun process to watch, it’s also very hard to mess up.  Just make sure not to puncture the mattress when you’re removing the plastic and you will be fine.  I use scissors, but Endy also provides a small tool in the box that makes it even harder to puncture the mattress.

If you’re still checking out Endy, make sure to read my Endy mattress review and Endy coupon pages.

Brentwood Home Review

Brentwood Home is a primarily online mattress company that sells latex, spring, and memory foam mattresses.  I tried the memory foam Sequoia mattress myself for this review, which is the higher-end mattress from their 2016 line.

Overall I really like the company Brentwood Home, and had a good experience on the mattress – though I had a few complaints as well (see how Brentwood Home compares HERE).  Read on for my full Brentwood Home review.

You will love Brentwood Home if you…

  • Want a “bed-in-a-box” with options – Brentwood Home fits the mold of the new popular online-only company (great value, great return policy, etc) but has way more options, both in terms of type of mattress (memory foam, latex foam, spring) and firmness
  • Want great value – This is the second mattress I’ve reviewed from Brentwood Home, and I’m truly impressed by the quality of the mattresses vs the price.  One of the best mattress values out there in my opinion, even considering the other online products.
  • Want a strong USA brand – Brentwood Home has been designing and manufacturing mattresses in Los Angeles for quite a while.  They have a really great brand (that resonates with me at least) and have a proven track record of quality.Brentwood Home Mattress Review

Brentwood Home Review

You may not want Brentwood Home if you…

  • Don’t want options – part of the draw (for some) of the newer online-only companies is there is just one option that targets the average sleeper.  While Brentwood Home has this mattress in their wheelhouse, they also have a number of other options, so you need to know a little bit about what you want to make a decision.
  • Want very low budget – Brentwood Home is great value, but some readers want a fine mattress at a very low price point (~$400 or less).  If you want any piece of foam to get you through the night, Brentwood Home may be out of budget.

Feel and Firmness

This video shows the feel and firmness of the Sequoia mattress, the firmest (and most expensive) of the Brentwood Home memory foam options:

The mattress clearly has the memory foam feel, since the top layer is memory foam.  However it does bounce back a little quicker than a pure memory foam mattress due to the latex under the memory foam.  If you want a quicker reacting mattress (easier to move around, get out of bed) I would check out their latex mattress options.

This is an interesting feel, having both cushion and a firm quality.  I would put at an 7.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale.  I recommend the firmest option if you prefer a firm mattress, or are primarily a stomach sleeper.  They also have the Coronado (medium firm) and the Sierra (firm feel) in their memory foam line.

Motion Transfer Test

The mattress is high quality memory foam, so as expected it performs very well in the motion transfer test. The other firmness options in the memory foam line should perform similarly well.

Memory foam typically performs the best for motion isolation, so though I haven’t tried the latex or spring options from Brentwood Home, you can expect they perform slightly less well. However they still may perform at a high level, and may still be a great mattress for couples.

Brentwood Home Mattress Construction

Brentwood Home mattresses are manufactured in the Los Angeles factory.  Naturally each mattress in the line will vary based on the firmness and comfort layer material, so reference the Brentwood Home website for any manufacturing concerns (they are very transparent with construction).

Brentwood Home Mattress Construction

The Sequoia consists of:

  • Comfort layer: 2 inches of gel memory foam
  • Next layer: 2 inches of natural latex
  • Next layer: 2 inches of Airlux ventilated foam
  • Base layer: 6 inches of therapeutic base foam

In the photo above you can also see the wool yarn tufting, which I think is a great feature.  It has a nice aesthetic, but note that it runs throughout the whole mattress (holding it together) so that the layers are held together without chemical adhesives.

My Experience With Brentwood Home

I slept on this mattress for a little over a week, and overall had a good experience.  It definitely has the feel of a very high-end mattress, and I really enjoyed the small touches (handles, tufting, etc) in the design.

I’m a side-sleeper, so I found the Sequoia to be overall comfortable, but perhaps a little too firm for me.  I suspect that in this line the Coronado would be a better fit for me personally.  The support was really outstanding, and I’m glad to say the mattress didn’t sleep hot (even though I’m testing it as New York summer is starting).

This is the second mattress I have reviewed from Brentwood Home, and again they impressed in terms of brand and mattress quality.

Brentwood Home vs Tempurpedic

In my mind Brentwood Home is best known for their memory foam mattresses, and so naturally a Tempurpedic comparison always comes up.  In my mind the main differences are in quality, price, and construction.

Brentwood Home vs Tempurpedic

Quality

The higher-end mattresses from Brentwood Home (including the Sequoia I have here) definitely give the medium-range Tempurpedics a run for their money.  The sleep experience and feeling of high quality memory foam were both very similar for me.  The lower-priced Brentwood Home mattresses are still good quality (and great value), but I wouldn’t compare them directly to Tempur-pedic in terms of quality.

Price

As I’ve said before, Tempurpedic makes some great mattresses, but they are very expensive.  Brentwood Home wins hands-down on price (and value).

Construction

Tempurpedic typically sticks with a full memory foam feel, while you will note that Brentwood Home included a layer of latex in their memory foam line.  This makes Brentwood Home a little more responsive than Tempurpedic.

Other things to note:

  • All mattresses have free shipping and a 120 night guarantee
  • They are made in Los Angeles, USA
  • Also offer other sleeping products, as well as items for kids and pets

Final Recommendation

I had another good experience with Brentwood Home, and again think they delivered on value. I haven’t tried their spring or latex mattresses, so I would be interested to hear if anyone purchases and has a good/bad experience.

Brentwood Home is a little less recognized than a lot of mattresses I review (at least here on the East coast), but I think they are a stand-out company and definitely deserve a strong look during your mattress search.

Zenhaven Mattress Review

Zenhaven is a unique addition to the online-only mattress market. It is a mattress aiming to compete with the very top luxury brands and consists of all-natural latex. It comes from The Saatva Company which also produces Saatva (innerspring) and Loom & Leaf (memory foam) mattresses. I was definitely interested to test it out given that is so unique compared to the other mattresses I have reviewed.

Zenhaven mattress review

You May Like Zenhaven If You…

  • Want A “Green” Mattress That’s Actually Natural– many mattress companies make false claims about how green their products are (when they are in fact using synthetic latex, not natural latex).  Zenhaven stands out in that it uses 100% natural Talalay latex, meaning it is actually all-natural/organic. If you are worried about chemicals, allergies, dust mites, etc., then this could be a great option for you.
  • You Want A Luxury Mattress And Value – This mattress is taking aim at the very top luxury brands (in terms of specs) while using the online-only business model to cut out excess costs. A comparable mattress generally costs 2x this price in stores.
  • You Want A Balanced Feel – Zenhaven has the contouring ability of memory foam without the feeling of sinking in the mattress. If you want pressure-point relief without some of the drawbacks of memory foam, this may be a good option for you.
  • You Want A Durable Mattress (long lasting) – Though this mattress is relatively new to market, the latex used in this mattress is very durable. I suspect the mattress will hold up very well over time.
  • You Are Worried About Getting The Right Firmness Level – This mattress is flippable, meaning it has two firmness options in one.

You May Not Want To Get A Zenhaven If:

  • You’re Shopping On A Budget – This is a true luxury mattress, so it may not fall in some people’s budget (try my best under 1k for a level down).
  • You Like The Memory Foam Sinking In Feel – Some people enjoy the feeling of sleeping “in” their mattress. This sinking in feel tends to be love it or hate it based on my experience. Zenhaven is more of a balanced feel where it contours well but you don’t have that sinking in feel. You feel like you are sleeping “on” the mattress.
  • You Don’t Plan On Having The Mattress For Very Long– This is a mattress built with very durable materials. This is best for people viewing their purchase as a long-term investment. If you don’t plan on having your mattress for very long then the value of getting this mattress specifically will be less.

Basic Construction

  • All-Natural Talalay Latex – The mattress uses all-natural talalay latex. This means the mattress will be highly durable, have a balanced feel, be resilient/bouncy, and be devoid of any toxic chemicals. The latex is derived from South America and is more consistent and durable than latex coming from Sri Lanka.
  • Flippable – The mattress is “flippable,” which means there are two comfort layers in one. If you are worried about getting the right firmness level, this is a great solution that can alleviate those fears.
  • Zoned Construction– The mattress is “zoned,” meaning it is constructed to provide more support where the heavier parts of your body are. From my experience, this means greater spinal alignment and it should be great for those looking to reduce back pain. It also means the mattress will be more durable.

Other Things To Note

  • Given the latex construction, the mattress will have great resilience/bounce
  • The natural latex used in this mattress has an open-celled structure that makes it very breathable.  The mattress slept very cool in my sleep trial.
  • The mattress will be hand delivered, not shipped in a box.
  • If you ever need to move the mattress, you should know that it’s very heavy (latex is a very heavy material).
  • This mattress comes from the same company that makes Saatva and Loom And Leaf. They have q

Final Word

Personally I get really upset by all the false advertising around natural products in the mattress market, so I’m glad that Zenhaven has delivered a quality product at a (relatively) affordable price.

I really enjoyed sleeping on the mattress, generally latex is my favorite sleeping surface so a mattress of this quality was a real treat. If it is in your price range, I would recommend giving it a strong look.

Endy Mattress Review

Endy is a bed-in-a-box that quickly became popular in Canada, then expanded to the US.  The mattress has a memory foam comfort layer, a very cool cover, and (in my opinion) is a bit softer than average.

Overall I really liked Endy, though I had a few complaints as well (see how Endy compares HERE).  Read about my experience in my full Endy mattress review.

You will love Endy if you…

  • Want great comfort – with a nice memory foam comfort layer, Endy stands out in that it has a nice plush feel
  • Want a slightly softer mattress – whether you are a side sleeper or just prefer a slightly softer mattress, Endy will deliver
  • Want great value – Endy is shipped straight from the factory to your door, saving on a lot of costs associated with selling a mattress (some of which are passed on to the consumer)
  • Love Canadian made – Endy is manufactured in Toronto, so it’s a short trip from the factory to your door (relative to where most mattresses are made) if you’re in Canada or the US

  • Want a firm mattress – the Endy mattress is definitely slightly softer than average, so if you are interested in a firm mattress, Endy probably won’t be the best fit
  • Are a stomach sleeper – generally I recommend that stomach sleepers go for a firmer mattress.  Of course it always comes down to your preference

Feel and Firmness

Endy has a great feel, more plush than most mattresses of this thickness.  I’d put the firmness at a 5.5 out of 10, slightly softer than average.

You can see that the mattress is memory foam, so a little slow to respond (not a bad thing, just something to note for your preferences).

Endy Sleep Construction

Endy is manufactured in Toronto, Canada and starts with a visually appealing hypoallergenic stretch-knit cover (kind of feels like an optical illusion)!

Endy Mattress Cover

The mattress is 10 inches thick in total and consists of the following foam layers:

  • Comfort layer: 2 inches of 3 lb memory foam (infused with cooling gel)
  • Transition layer: 3 inches of 1.8 lb soft support foam
  • Base layer: 5 inches of 1.8 lb firm support foam

I like that Endy clearly discloses their foam densities and is very transparent about their materials.

Motion transfer Test

Endy has a top layer of memory foam, so we expect it to perform very well in the motion transfer test below:

As you can see, the object is barely disturbed as I really push on the foam nearby, one of the best performances of motion transfer of all the mattresses I have reviewed.

Endy vs Casper

Endy is most often compared to Casper since they are both popular bed-in-a-box options available in Canada.  I think both mattresses are of great quality at a similar price point, and I enjoyed sleeping on both.  I would make the decision based on two factors, foam type and firmness.

Endy mattress vs Casper

Foam type – Endy’s top layer is memory foam, and Casper’s top layer is latex foam.  As a result, Casper has a little more “spring” to the mattress, while Endy has a more traditional memory foam feel.

Firmness – I found both mattresses to be on the softer side, but Endy is still slightly softer than Casper.

Other things to note

  • Endy is made in Toronto, Canada (ships to the US as well)
  • They offer a 100 night sleep trial and 10 year warranty
  • They also offer a pillow that I am anxious to try!

Final recommendation

I really enjoyed sleeping on the Endy mattress, for a side sleeper like myself I think it’s a great option (though it may be too soft for stomach sleepers).  I like the transparency and brand, and think at the price point it offers a very good value.
