Ghostbed vs Purple Mattress

Ghostbed and Purple are two companies that have had great success in the online mattress game. While both are incredibly popular, they are also very different from each other as well.

I’ll try my best to highlight the main differences to help you in your decision if you are down to Ghostbed vs Purple.

Ghostbed vs Purple Mattress

Key Similarities

  • Similar business model (online-only)
  • Both offer financing options
  • Both have durable materials

Key Differences

  • Ghostbed is 1.5” thicker
  • Ghostbed costs $750, while Purple costs $999 for a Queen
  • Ghostbed has latex foam over memory foam; Purple’s top layer is a hyper-elastic polymer
  • Purple is bouncier than the Ghostbed
  • Purple is a new company, while Ghostbed is under a parent company that has been in the mattress industry for a long time
  • Purple may have a slight edge on motion transfer

Construction/Feel

Ghostbed has 1.5” of latex foam, over 2” of 4 lb. memory foam, over 7.5” of 2 lb. polyfoam.  All of the components are good, durable materials that should last a good while and be appropriate for people of all weight ranges.

To me, the feel is best described as “balanced.” (compared to other mattress reviews)  You sink into the mattress just slightly.  There is a slight amount of bounce to it.  It conforms well like a memory foam mattress without the feeling of getting stuck.

Purple is 9.5” thick.  It has a top layer of 2” of hyper-elastic polymer over 2 layers of polyfoam.  The top layer is designed to be extremely pressure-relieving.  To me, it felt a little firm but very pressure-relieving at the same time (a very unique feel).  It definitely felt like I was sleeping “on” the mattress rather than “in” the mattress.  It was also very bouncy.

Overall, the feel is different between the two mattresses.  Ghostbed was more of a traditional, balanced feel with a little bit of sinking into the mattress.  Purple was bouncy, a bit firmer, and more of a sleeping “on” the mattress feel.  One feel isn’t necessarily better than the other.  It’s really up to your personal preferences.

Price

The Purple is $999 for a Queen, including free shipping.

The Ghostbed is $750 for a Queen, including free shipping.

You can typically get a discount on both of them, but either way the Ghostbed is going to be less expensive than the Purple.

Pick Ghostbed If:

  • You Want To Save Some Extra Money– If you really can’t decide between the two mattresses, then maybe cost savings could be the deciding factor.  You will be able to save at least $200 by going with the Ghostbed.
  • You Prefer A More Standard Foam Feel– If you want a more traditional feel, I think that’s what Ghostbed provides.  You get pressure relief and a slight bounce/resilience, all without sinking in too much and getting stuck in the mattress.

Pick Purple If:

  • You Like Bounce– Purple is definitely bouncier than the Ghostbed.  The top layer instantly responds to your movement.  Some people like more bounce, while others like less bounce.  If you want more bounce, then Purple may be the way to go.
  • You Are Extra Sensitive To Heat– Ghostbed does a great job of staying cool.  Purple might do the best job at it that we’ve seen.  The construction is set up in such a way that it doesn’t have any heat retention at all.
  • You Don’t Mind Taking A “Risk” On A New Company / Mattress Type– Purple is a brand new company, so you won’t have the benefit of years of customer experience.  The hyper-elastic polymer is also a new innovation in the online-only mattress market.  Some people might see this is a slight “risk,” but the return policy is really good, so I don’t think it’s much of a risk.

Overall

It’s really hard to say one mattress is better than the other since they are so different.  I personally really liked both of them.  Take a look at the key differences, and hopefully you can come a little closer to making the right decision for you.
