Casper vs Purple Mattress

Casper is a company that changed the mattress industry forever with its online-only business model.  They have had amazing success since they first launched and the company is now worth a LOT of money.  Purple started with a Kickstarter campaign and has also seen good success since their launch.

Key Differences

  • Purple has a bouncier/more resilient top layer
  • With Casper, most people will sink into the mattress a bit more than with Purple
  • Casper does well with sleeping cool, but Purple addresses this better than just about any other mattress
  • Casper is about $150 cheaper than Purple (not including any potential discounts)

Construction/Feel

The Purple mattress is 9.5” thick, with 2” of hyper-elastic polymer over two layers of polyfoam.  The key to the mattress is the hyper-elastic polymer.  It does an amazing job of keeping the mattress from getting hot, is highly pressure-relieving, and is very bouncy/resilient.  You feel more like you are sleeping “on” the mattress rather than sinking into it too much.

See the feel of Purple here

The Casper is 9.5” thick, with 1.5” of latex, over 1.5” of memory foam, over two layers of polyfoam.  With Casper, you sink into the mattress just a little bit, but nothing like you would with a more traditional memory foam mattress.  There is some bounce to it, but not nearly as much as with Purple.  It has a more middle-of-the-road foam feel that does resemble a healthy mix of latex and memory foam traits.

Both mattresses have good durable materials.  The main differences are the feel.  If you want a bouncier feel, Purple might be the way to go.  If you want a more standard feel, then Casper may be the way to go.  If you are worried about sleeping hot, both do a good job at addressing, with Purple probably having a slight edge.

Price

Purple offers its Queen at $999, including free shipping.

Casper offers its Queen at $850, including free shipping.

Pick Purple If:

  • You Like A Lot Of Bounce– Purple is definitely the bouncier of the two.  Some people like this a lot, while others don’t.  If you like having extra bounce, then Purple might be the best choice.
  • You Are Really Sensitive To A Hot Mattress– Both mattresses do a good job at sleeping cool, but I would give the slight edge to Purple in this category.
  • You Prefer Sleeping “On” The Mattress– If you don’t like sinking into your mattress, then Purple may be more apt for you.  With Casper there is a bit of sink, but with Purple there’s definitely less.

Purple Mattress Reviews

Purple mattress

Pick Casper If:

  • You Prefer A More Traditional Feel– The Casper feel probably caters to a greater variety of sleepers because it is a mix of latex and memory foam.  There isn’t too much bounce, you sink into the mattress a little bit, and overall the materials will probably feel more familiar to people.
  • You Want To Save A Little Extra Money– If you really can’t decide and think you’ll like either one, then you will save at least an extra hundred dollars by going with the Casper.
  • You Want More 3rd Party Validation– Given that Casper has been around for much longer, there are so many different reviews available for the mattress than with Purple currently.

Overall

I enjoyed my time sleeping on both mattresses, and I think a lot of people will too.  Both are great options, so I don’t think you can go wrong with either one.  Take a look at some of the major differences and see how they relate to your personal preferences, and compare them to my other mattress reviews as well.  From there, you should be able to make a well informed decision.
