Amerisleep Mattress Review

Amerisleep is a high-quality memory foam mattress company that takes advantage of the online business model, but also goes the extra step to differentiate its mattress by including celliant and using advanced cooling technology, amongst other things.

They have a number of mattresses available, I reviewed the Colonial, one on the higher end of their line.  I really enjoyed the experience, but I had a few complaints as well.  Learn more in my full Amerisleep review.

You will love Amerisleep if you…

• Want Celliant technology – celliant technology is thought to improve recovery time for athletes.  I’m not able to comment on the efficacy of the technology myself, but there are a number of athletic gear/apparel companies that promote celliant.  Certainly something to consider for athletes.
• Want to sleep cool – more than any other memory foam brand I’ve seen, Amerisleep goes the extra step to make sure you sleep cool.  See the “Sleeping Cool” cooling section below for construction details.
• Love memory foam – Amerisleep is the pinnacle of the memory foam experience.  It is of the highest quality, with good density (suggesting good long-term durability), and in my mind competes with the higher-end Tempurpedic models.

You may not like Amerisleep if you…

• Are looking for a low/medium budget option – Amerisleep is definitely pulling out all the stops with their mattresses, and targeting the higher-end consumer (they fall in my best mattress under $2k category)
• Want more “spring” in the mattress – though Amerisleep isn’t the most “sinking in” memory foam mattress I’ve tried, it does land squarely in the memory foam feel.  It has the benefits of great comfort and support, but if you’re used to innerspring (or even latex), you’re going to notice a significant difference in bounce.

Firmness and Feel

I have the Colonial model, which is one of the softer mattresses that Amerisleep offers.  I think this is a great option for side-sleepers, but I would go with a firmer option (Americana, Revere, or Liberty) if you are a stomach or pure back sleeper.

Though this is a pure memory foam mattress, you can see that that it has a little more spring than average.  It has the typical memory foam feel, but not as much of the “stuck in the bed” feeling that some memory foam mattresses have.

Of course, it doesn’t have as much bounce as a latex or innerspring mattress.

My Experience with Amerisleep

I opted for the Colonial since I’m primarily a side sleeper.  One important thing to note is that it took probably two weeks of sleeping on the mattress for it to soften up.  This isn’t unusual for a foam mattress, but just make sure to bake in an “adjustment” period as you’re evaluating the mattress.

During the first week I enjoyed the mattress, but part way through the second week I started to really love it.  For a side sleeper it’s a really great option, it’s one of the best pressure-relieving mattresses I have tried for the hips and shoulder.

Of course I noted the Celliant technology, but I can’t say that I noticed a very obvious difference in falling asleep time or recovery time after a workout.  That being said, I’m not super-sensitive to either of those, so it would be hard to notice a really obvious improvement for me personally.

Celliant Infused Cover

The Celliant infused cover makes it such that the celliant fabric has contact with your body, which I believe is best practice for getting the most out of the technology.

Celliant technology takes your body heat and turns it into infrared light, which aims to help recovery for athletes and may even help you fall asleep faster.

Amerisleep Motion Transfer Test

I do the motion transfer test to see if a mattress will be a good option for couples.  See the results below:

As expected of a high quality memory foam mattress, Amerisleep performs exceedingly well.  Additionally, the Amerisleep has great edge support for a foam mattress, which makes the mattress actually feel bigger (you can sleep closer to the edge comfortably).  This makes it better for sleeping with a partner as well.

Construction

In addition to the Celliant infused cover, the Amerisleep Colonial consists of:

• Top layer: 2 inches Bio-Pur+ Foam
• Transition layer: 4 inches Affinity Layer with Surface Modification Technology
• Base layer: 7 inches Bio-core foam

What is Bio-Pur (and Bio-Pur+) Foam?

Bio-Pur foam is 4 lb density memory foam, which is used in all of the Amerisleep mattresses.  The Bio-Pur+ foam is different (present in the Colonial I reviewed), which is altered for additional air flow (for sleeping more cool).

What is Surface Modification Technology (SMT)?

This is present in some of Amerisleep’s models (it is included in the Colonial).  Giant rollers are used to create channels into the bottom of the foam, which aim to improve air flow and help the mattress sleep cooler.

Other things to note

• They offer a strong warranty, 20 years, 10 years full replacement and 10 years pro-rated
• All models are made in the USA
• They offer a 90 night sleep trial (full refund within 90 days)

Final Recommendation

Amerisleep definitely falls in the top tier of mattresses I have reviewed.  The Celliant technology wasn’t such a draw for me, but for some readers I know that’s definitely of interest.  I do like that they have multiple firmness options as well, which unfortunately is somewhat unique in the online-only space.

If you are looking for a luxury memory foam mattress, I think that Amerisleep is definitely worthy of consideration.

Ghostbed vs Leesa

Ghostbed and Leesa have emerged as the two most popular Casper alternatives in the online mattress space.  I slept on each for a few nights, so I’ll highlight the differences based on the specs and my personal experience.

While I like both Ghostbed and Leesa, they have some distinct differences, and I think it’s easy to decide between them if you understand the mattresses and how they cater to different sleep preferences.

Key Similarities

• Both mattresses are sold only online (and delivered in a box)
• Both have great return polices (home trials) and top notch customer service
• Both are all foam, with comfort layers aiming to provide a little “bounce”
• Both have zero interest financing options (Leesa for 6 months, Ghostbed for 12 months)

Key Differences

• GhostBed has a latex comfort layer, while Leesa has an Avena foam comfort layer (see latex vs avena)
• Leesa is 10 inches thick, while Ghostbed is 11 inches thick
• Ghostbed is slightly less expensive:  For a queen, Ghostbed is $700 (with coupon) and Leesa is $790 (with coupon)

Construction

Leesa is 10 inches of foam in total, from top to bottom: 2 inches of Avena foam (a latex-like foam), over 2 inches of 3 lb. density memory foam, over 6 inches of 1.8 lb. density polyfoam.

Ghostbed is 11 inches of foam in total, from top to bottom: 1.5 inches of 3.5 lb Dunlop latex foam, over 2 inches of 4 lb memory foam, over 7.5 inches of 2 lb polyfoam.

You notice that Ghostbed densities are higher in each layer.  In terms of feel, especially on day one, the densities don’t really matter (in my opinion).  You should consider them if:

• You’re a heavier person/couple – higher density foam is typically better if you are a heavier person (think 200+ lbs).  I weigh ~155 lbs, so from that perspective I don’t have any personal experience to share, but it’s something to consider.
• You’re thinking about durability – a general thought in the mattress industry is a higher density foam will result in better durability.  This isn’t absolutely true, but perhaps something to consider since neither of these mattresses have been around long enough for true customer durability tests.

General Feel

I really liked the feel of both mattresses, both having a little more “spring” than memory foam due to the latex/avena layer.  With both you have more of a sleeping “on” the mattress, rather than sleeping “in” the mattress.  See the feel of the Ghostbed below:

I am a side-sleeper primarily, and both of these mattresses were great on the hips and shoulders when in that position.  If I had to choose for a side sleeper, I would go with Ghostbed, but the race is very close.  They are both great on the back also.  I am not much of a stomach sleeper, but just laying on them I think both are good options, though the Leesa feels particularly nice when on the stomach.

Customer Service/Home Trial/Warranty

Though there are slight differences in certain aspects of each of these (eg the length of the home trial), I think both are stand-outs in the industry in these categories.  Both companies are very customer-centric and provide great buying experiences.

Sleeping Hot

The top layer of Avena (Leesa) and latex (Ghostbed) both aim to keep the mattress from sleeping hot.  I tried both mattresses in the winter (in New York), so they weren’t tested during a hot summer month, but I expect that they will sleep cool as well as most top-tier mattresses even in less-than-ideal conditions.

Pick Leesa if:

• You are a pure stomach sleeper – in my opinion Leesa just feels especially good when sleeping on your stomach
• You like the design – Leesa has a very nicely designed cover.  While I think that may not be the best reason to buy a mattress, I know that some of my readers are very aesthetically focused

Pick Ghostbed if:

• You are price conscious – Ghostbed is noticeably cheaper than Leesa (after applying a coupon for each), and offers 12 month interest-free financing (compared to 6 month interest-free financing from Leesa)
• You are interested in durability – again this is just speculation based on the foam densities, but I suspect the Ghostbed will hold up slightly better over time
• You are heavier than average – due to the thicker mattress and denser foam, I think Ghostbed is a better option for heavier people/heavier couples

Final Recommendation

Both mattresses are great options, I can see why the have risen to be two of the most popular online-only brands.  You can’t go wrong with either mattress, but one may be better for you depending on your sleep preferences.  If you’re a stomach sleeper or are big into design, I’d give the edge to Leesa.  If you’re heavier, thinking about durability, or a side-sleeper, I’d give the edge to Ghostbed.

Novosbed and Loom & Leaf (L&L) are generally considered the two high-end online memory foam mattress brands. Both are very well-reviewed, have excellent customer service, and have great products (I’ve tried both and they really are top-notch).

There are some key differences that will make one or the other more suitable, depending on your sleep preferences.

This article will go through the major similarities and differences in an effort to clarify the decision if you have boiled your choice down to Loom & Leaf vs Novosbed.

• Both offer multiple firmness options: L&L offers 2, Novosbed offers 3

Key Differences and Main Points:

• Novosbed is unapologetically memory foam – Novosbed strongly advocates the benefits of sleeping on memory foam and has built their mattress to get you as close to the memory foam as possible. The cover has very little loft and they use 4 inches of pure, ultra-dense memory foam. On a Novosbed, you are about 1/16 inch away from the memory foam layer when you sleep. If you want a purist high-end memory foam mattress, Novosbed is the way to go.
• Loom & Leaf has a loftier (thicker) cover that integrates a layer of conventional foam to increase bounce and airflow between you and the memory foam. As a result, you get less of the memory foam effect with L&L. So, if you want a little less memory foam, L&L is a better choice.
• Novosbed Offers Comfort+ Firmness Adjustment – In the entire online mattress industry, this is unique to Novosbed: if your Novosbed mattress is too soft or too firm, they will ship you a “Comfort+ Kit” to adjust the firmness. • You Anticipate Having The Mattress For A Long Time – As mentioned, the Novosbed uses very durable materials that should last a long time. If you plan on having your mattress for a long time, then the value of the Novosbed becomes greater.
• You are in Canada – Novosbed is the only high-end mattress brand with easy, free shipping and returns in Canada.

Pick Loom & Leaf if:

• You Want a Little Less Memory Foam Feel – L&L is a more bouncy than Novosbed. If you don’t like memory foam as much, but want a high-end mattress, L&L is a good choice.
• You know what firmness you need – Loom and Leaf has 2 firmness options. If you don’t want the security of Novosbed’s Comfort+, go with L&L.
• You want White Glove Delivery – Novosbed doesn’t presently offer white glove delivery, so L&L is your best choice here.

Nest Easy Breather Pillow Review

The Easy Breather Pillow from Nest Bedding has been amongst my favorites, and is one of my preferred options in-between other pillow reviews.

Though I think it’s a great option, it’s not perfect for everyone or every situation.  Read my Nest Easy Breather Pillow review to see if this pillow is a good fit.

Pillow Construction

Nest Bedding is known for having more natural products, with this pillow being no exception.  The inside of the pillow is a shredded blend, consisting of shredded memory foam and other materials to mimic the feeling of a down pillow.

The shredding is great because you have some of the responsiveness of a memory foam pillow without the firmness that some memory foam pillows have (most people aren’t fans of the feeling).  You can see below the shredded stuffing:

The cover is made of Tencel fabric, making it soft to the touch and lightweight.  Also relatively easy to spot clean.

My Experience

The Easy Breather Pillow is available on the Nest Bedding site and Amazon, I just went ahead and bought from the Nest Bedding site.

When taking it out of the package, there was a slight chemical smell (called off-gassing) from the memory foam.  I was anxious to use the pillow, but I ended up waiting one night and letting it air out.  By the next day the smell was totally gone.

Checking out the pillow I noticed that it has a zipper, allowing you to see the shredded memory foam on the inside.  This zipper is important as well because if you want to customize the size/firmness of the pillow, you can just simply pull out some of the filling.  I didn’t end up doing this myself, but if you want a softer or thinner pillow, this could be a great feature!

I do like memory foam pillows, but they can be polarizing, causing neck and head soreness for some.  However, upon sleeping on the Easy Breather pillow, I think they really struck the right balance – it has the support of a memory foam pillow, but doesn’t have the firmness and too-slow responsiveness.

I slept in multiple positions throughout the night and found the pillow to be a good fit for each, even when sleeping on my stomach.  It’s honestly hard to describe the feel, it’s very unique – but my subjective opinion is that it’s one of the most comfortable pillows I’ve reviewed.

PROs

• Has the memory foam feel without the firmness (that can lead to neck soreness)
• Good air flow, keeping it cool (aka doesn’t sleep hot)
• Financing available
• Made in the USA
• Available in standard, queen, and king sizes
• Natural option available (with latex instead of memory foam)

Complaints

• Not machine washable
• Off-gassing smell upon opening (goes away within 24 hours)
• On the expensive side

Final Recommendation

The Nest Bedding Easy Breather Pillow is a great all-around pillow, and definitely one of my top picks.  Note they also have a natural option available if you want to be sleeping on fewer chemicals throughout the night.

The support/tradeoff firmness is my favorite, I use it when sleeping in any position, and have occasionally used it between the legs when sleeping on my side.

My Pillow Review

My Pillow is the most popular pillow on the market due to their extensive tv campaigns.  While I do think that it’s a great idea to invest in a quality pillow, I don’t think that My Pillow is the right option.

Overall I had a pretty bad experience with the pillow, and do not recommend it.  Read my full My Pillow Review to see some of the issues I experienced.

PROs

• Very soft and thin (could good for stomach sleepers or side sleepers)
• Reasonably priced (compared to high-end pillows)

Complaints

• Lumpy
• Too thin (bad for back sleepers)
• Feels low quality

My Experience

My Pillow is available at a number of locations, including Amazon, Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, Kohl’s, and QVC.  I ordered mine from Amazon, and upon arrival followed the first instructions: put it in the dryer for 15 minutes.

I’m a side sleeper and back sleeper, and used My Pillow as my primary pillow for a few nights.  It’s not too firm or big, so it didn’t hurt my neck.  However, it did feel like the foam was separated inside of it, kind of like a parting where my head went.  Definitely a little too lumpy.

This made me sink seemingly all the way through it, sometimes making it feel like I wasn’t sleeping on a pillow at all.

I read other reviews that complained about the lumpiness and thinness, and unfortunately I experienced it myself.  I even put it in the dryer for another 15 minutes after trying it for a few nights (in case it needed to puff up more), but that didn’t seem to make any difference.

I did try the pillow between the knees (when sleeping on my side), and this was a much better experience.  It actually is the right amount of cushion between the knees, and the pillow is a nice size so that it doesn’t dominate your bed.

My Pillow Specs

The My Pillow comes in sizes Queen and King (I tried the queen).  The Queen is actually quite small, smaller than other Queen sizes I’ve tried anyway. I believe the My Pillow has a warranty, but honestly I can’t imagine it getting to worse condition than when it arrived.

Final Recommendation

I don’t think the My Pillow is a scam (as other people have suggested in other user reviews) – I just think that with such a strong marketing campaign, the My Pillow is overhyped.  It’s fine, but not the dream pillow that you have been searching for.

The National Sleep Foundation does support the pillow, so they are clearly seeing something I’m not. I would suggested investing in a quality pillow, just not My Pillow. Look at my top reviewed pillows for other options I recommend.
